Dear current students, parents of minor students, and prospective students:

It is imperative that you read, review, and understand the studio policies in order to continue or begin lessons in the studio. Your acknowledgement of this document will be needed before lessons can begin if you are a new student, or by June 1st if you are a current student to either continue or begin lessons for the 2026-2027 year.

Tuition, Supplies, Fees, and Education Platform:

  • Tuition, payment options, and fees: The tuition that is paid by students is an annual flat fee that is broken into 12 separate consistent payments. Tuition is due at the first week of each month. Tuition is NOT based on a class-by-class policy, and is understood by the student or their parent/guardian that the tuition rate is consistent from month to month. Your tuition payment guarantees your roster placement in the studio. It is required from all students to pay through the studio’s AutoPay system, which uses a credit card to automatically collect your payment at the beginning of each month. Students will receive a monthly invoice.

  • Student Supplies and Materials: Supplies are NOT included in your tuition fee. Students are required to bring their own materials to each lesson. If a student arrives to lessons without their materials more than twice in a month, the instructor will not be able to engage in lessons until the materials are brought in by the student. Supply lists for each project and where they can be purchased will be sent via email to students. If a student wishes to keep their materials stored in the studio, please let the instructor know, and a storage area will be provided for their art materials.

  • Left behind materials and projects: All students who withdraw from the studio will have 60 days to collect their projects (finished or not) and materials. Projects and materials left in the studio after 60 days will become permanent property of the studio.

  • Studio-Provided Drawing Paper (Optional): For student convenience, the instructor can provide all needed papers for students in the studio for a fee of $6.00 per sheet. This includes Legion Stonehenge paper, watercolor paper, mixed media paper and more. Papers will be kept inside of the studio. Students who do not wish to partake in the studio-provided option required to purchase the recommended brands of paper in order to ensure better artistic integrity and quality of work, and bring them into the studio when new projects begin.

  • Studio Projects, Syllabuses, and Secondary Exercises: This studio is a project-based studio, meaning that students will work on projects that facilitate technical skill development, art tool use, and creative thinking and problem solving. If the student or parent of the student needs a curriculum-based syllabus for themselves or their child, please let the instructor know so that one can be developed and implemented during the student’s instruction time. Secondary projects and exercises are encouraged by the instructor and aid in developing artistic skills more quickly, but they must be requested by the student or their parent, and they can only be critiqued in person during the student’s lesson time. There are no due dates for any projects of any kind that take place within or outside the studio.

Studio Schedule, Hours, and Notices:

Studio Hours of Operation & Yearly Studio Schedule :  The studio is open Sunday from 2:00pm-6:00pm, and Monday-Thursday from 10:00am-7:00pm. The studio is closed Fridays and Saturdays. All meetings and consultations that are outside of a registered student’s lesson time are by appointment only. This studio’s schedule is in accordance with the Plano Independent School District’s Academic Calendar year, and operates on a quarterly basis.

Lessons will take place at the same time weekly with the following exceptions:

  • Spring Quarter: March-May: PISD Spring Break, Easter Sunday

  • Summer Quarter: June-August: July 4th, Professional Development Week*, two weeks of summer vacation (may or may not be consecutive)

  • Fall Quarter: September-November: Plano ISD Fall Break (the week of Columbus Day in October), PISD Thanksgiving Break

  • Winter Quarter: December-February: PISD Winter Break

*Professional Development Week: In order to provide the very best educational services to my students, and to remain active as a certified educator with the TEA, I engage in a professional development forum every year for one week in the summer. This forum runs from 10:00am-5:00pm each day and occurs in art museums across DFW. Educators involved in this forum are required to conduct research and engage in activities outside of the forum, resulting in suspension of lessons for this week. Students may request a secondary project or exercise to work on outside of their regular lesson time during this week if they wish. Secondary projects and exercises can be brought into the studio for evaluation during their next lesson.

Advanced notice will be given for all studio closures. The studio’s fiscal and calendar year restarts June 1st

Contact Hours & Studio Notices: The preferred method of communication is email or text. Due to the nature of teaching visual art lessons, it is very difficult for me to talk on the phone during active studio hours. If the matter is urgent, texting is faster and more accessible. If you need to speak in person, please let me know at the beginning of the lesson time. General notices and updates will be sent via email, and text messaging.

Missed Lessons:

I understand things come up that may interfere with scheduled lessons. Please inform me of an anticipated missed lesson with as much notice as possible (24 hour notice at minimum). If there’s no time to email or text in advance, please send a message at your earliest convenience. Students that miss two lessons in a row with no previous communication will forfeit their lesson time.

There are different circumstances for missed lessons, which are outlined in the list below:

  • Inclement Weather: A weather closing is defined as a day the Plano ISD announces school closures, cancels afterschool events due to weather, or the National Weather Service issues a “Warning”. Tornado, flash flood, severe weather, and winter storm are all possible weather closings. Weather closings will be announced by text or email. Please text me if you are unsure about weather-related closures or if your drive is unsafe. Your safety is my primary concern. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to reschedule lessons missed due to these acts of nature. Online instruction may be offered if power is active at the studio.

  • Student Scheduling Conflict: These scheduling conflicts typically arise from another activity, and are known beforehand. Vacations, work trips, school events, etc. are usual reasons. By student request, a secondary project or exercise can be given and worked on by the student for the duration of their regular lesson time (e.g. 30 minutes, 1 hour), and the piece can be brought in during their next lesson time for evaluation. These lessons will not be rescheduled to a different time slot or refunded.

  • Last Minute Cancellation: Last-minute cancellations or no shows due to illness, or other reasons will not be rescheduled or refunded.

  • Student or Instructor Illness: Please do not show if you, or your child(ren) who are students have had fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or are thought to be contagious with any virus within the previous 24 hours. Due to the high volume of students on the roster and a full schedule, lessons missed due to illness on either the instructor or the student’s part cannot be made up in-person. Online workshops and live sketching sessions via Zoom or assigned secondary projects may be offered to the student if they or the instructor are ill during their lesson time. Students are not required to participate in online instruction.

  • Extended Scheduling Conflicts: In the event of extended conflicts such as band/sports practice, work travel, long summer vacation, or other ongoing activities that will result in two or more missed weeks in a row, please contact me in advance to discuss options. In most cases, it’s possible to switch with another student either temporarily or permanently with advanced enough notice. I will not be able to hold any time slot without your tuition payment.

  • Teacher Scheduling Conflict: Though I make every effort to avoid conflicts, they are sometimes unavoidable. I will occasionally need to miss a lesson due to a school event, teacher board meeting, exhibition, or other unforeseen circumstance. In the case of missing lessons due to another outside non-illness related obligation, I will provide options such as a potential rescheduling day, or other options.

Online Lessons and Outside Secondary Projects: Online instruction may be offered to a student if they or the instructor is ill during their lesson time via Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Workshops are provided for students ages 5-11, and live sketching sessions or secondary project work/assessment is offered to students ages 12 and up. All online assignments will be evaluated by the instructor in real time. Though students are not required to take their lesson online, it is encouraged for them to do so by the instructor to ensure they receive instruction time for the week. These online lessons are for students who cannot be in the studio due to an illness, if the instructor is ill and quarantining, or if they are out of town and can’t be in the studio. These lessons cannot be rescheduled to a different time slot or refunded.

Rescheduling Policy:  I only offer rescheduled (make-up) lessons if I miss due to outside obligations that are not illness-related (e.g. Nasher Advisory Board Meetings). If rescheduled lesson time options are offered, it is up to the student to select the best time for them to come in for their rescheduled lesson. Students who miss any rescheduled lesson may not reschedule a second time if they fail to show up for the selected time.

Studio Space, Furniture, Materials, and Security:

All studio space, furniture, and materials must be treated with care and respect. Students causing damage to furniture, the space, artworks, or supplies will be required to pay the replacement cost of the furniture or item, and may be dismissed from the studio.

  • Designated Space: The art studio is localized to the studio space ONLY. Students and parents may not touch the marimba located in the studio foyer, or any other objects not related to the studio. Students and their parents may not enter any other room in the instructor’s home without verbal permission. Parents (and other relatives to the student) are not permitted inside of the working studio space (unless the parent is a student of the studio), and may not touch any materials, books, or works of art in the studio at any time. Students must ask permission if they need any extra materials or items in the studio. No exceptions.

  • Security: There is a doorbell camera and a live camera in the studio in which both audio and video are recorded at all times. This ensures student and instructor safety and security in the studio.

Student and Parent Expectations:

  • No soliciting from students or their parents of any type is permitted.

  • Plagiarism of artistic works is not permitted in the studio. Students or parents may not submit artwork created by another individual as a subject prompt for a potential art piece. It is recommended that the student and instructor develop the idea and project subjects while in the studio.

  • Students, parents and guardians are not permitted to film lessons or take photos of the instructor, the studio space, or the instructor’s residence without permission.

  • Students or parents who damage property in the studio, leave the designated studio areas, or demonstrate disrespectful, dangerous, or disruptive behavior will be asked to leave the studio.

Parent/Guardian Lesson Visitation

A parent or guardian is always welcome in the waiting area during their child’s lesson, however, it is not recommended by the instructor. Parent attendance during their child’s lesson frequently leads to student distraction, disengagement, and performance anxiety. If a parent does choose to stay during the duration of their child’s lesson, the parent must follow the following expectations while they are in the waiting area:

  • Only ONE adult guardian (parent, guardian, older sibling) is allowed in the waiting area during the student’s lesson. Parents may not bring their other children, friends, or other family members into the studio or the waiting area.

  • Parents may not intervene, provide aid to the student, or interrupt the instructor during the lesson period. If a parent has an issue with the instruction that occurs inside of the studio, they are to speak with the instructor privately outside of active studio hours.

  • If a student is frequently distracted by a parent’s presence, a request from the instructor will be given that the parent speak with the child privately about staying engaged in the lesson.

  • Parents may be asked by the instructor to sit in during a student’s lesson if behavioral intervention is needed by the parent, or to help with student anxiety or accommodations.

The instructor reserves the right to dismiss any student for uncooperative or intrusive student or parent behavior. Tuition will not be refunded or compensated.

Drop-off, Pick-up: Please drop off your students no more than 5 minutes before the scheduled lesson time and pick them up promptly. This allows me adequate time to clean up and reset the studio between lessons and ensures a full lesson time for all students. Students who arrive 5 minutes early are asked to wait for their lesson quietly.

Entering the Studio: Students and parents are required to knock or ring the doorbell to enter the studio, and are NOT permitted to walk in without notice. This is to ensure security for the students occupying the studio, the instructor’s family and home, and the instructor.

Parking: Please, DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF OR BLOCK THE MAILBOX IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE, OR NEIGHBOR’S MAILBOX. Kindly park across the street or down the street, making sure to not block neighbor’s driveways or spaces.

Student Withdrawal: Kindly provide 30-days notice if you wish to withdraw from lessons. This allows me the opportunity to schedule a new student in the spot you are vacating. Students who do not provide an advanced notice will not be compensated or refunded for their tuition if the withdrawal is less than 30 days from their departure.
